Millie and Christine McKoy were conjoined twins born into slavery in 1851 North Carolina who became international performers known as the Carolina Twins. This episode explores their extraordinary survival story, from human exhibition in 19th century sideshows to becoming multilingual singers who toured Europe and America. We examine the history of conjoined twins, slavery in the United States, and the complex world of Victorian era freak shows and traveling exhibitions. How did two Black women in post Civil War America navigate racism, exploitation, fame, and financial success while insisting they were two distinct individuals. Their life raises haunting questions about autonomy, spectacle, resilience, and what it truly meant to reclaim identity in a world determined to define them.
