  • The Ghost of Good Friday
    2026/03/29

We are standing in a heavy week for the Last Frontier.

This past Tuesday, March 24th, marked the 37th anniversary of the night the earth tore open in Prince William Sound. And as we look at the calendar, we see a familiar shadow approaching: Good Friday.

On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez supertanker struck Bligh Reef in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, spilling roughly 11 million gallons of crude oil. It remained the largest oil spill in U.S. history until the 2010 Deep water Horizon disaster.

In this episode I will touch on the events, the impact, and the lasting legacy of that tragic disaster.

    2026/02/17

The James W. Dalton Highway is more than just a road; it is a 414-mile engineering marvel that functions as the literal central nervous system of Alaska’s economy. Carved through the absolute limit of the habitable world, it connects the interior hub of Fairbanks to the industrial heart of Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean.

In this episode, we venture into the heart of the "deep freeze" to explore the intersection of atmospheric physics and ancient folklore. When the temperature drops below -4°F (-20°C), the air ceases to be just empty space and instead becomes a canvas for some of the rarest optical phenomena on Earth.

  • Christmas In The Greatland
    2025/12/21

In this, shorter than normal episode Christmas In The Great Land, we journey into the heart of an Alaskan winter to discover how residents turn the "Big Dark" into a season of warmth and light. We explore the deep-rooted tradition of Selaviq (Starring) in Russian Orthodox communities, where a spinning star leads carolers through the snow.

We also take a trip to North Pole, Alaska, to see where the holiday spirit lives year-round, and sit down for a virtual "subsistence feast" featuring moose roast and Akutaq. From the giant star shining on the Chugach Mountains to the crackle of solstice bonfires, this episode celebrates the resilience, community, and unique cultural tapestry that makes a Christmas in Alaska unlike anywhere else on Earth.

I also touch on a special ceremony that makes me part of a special group, with some amazing people as well as another story about a true Alaska Hockey Legend.
